Case Details
This patient in her 50s presented with concern for left eye appearing small and creating obvious asymmetry between the eyes.
On evaluation, Dr. Phan noted left upper eyelid margin resting at the center of the pupil, a finding consistent with lid ptosis. This occurred when the muscles responsible for lifting the eyelid thinned, stretched and weakened over time. Dr. Phan also noted signs of milder ptosis on the right, that would become more prominent after repair on the left, a phenomenon called Hering's. To address the left ptosis and prevent the right ptosis from worsening, Dr. Phan recommended bilateral internal ptosis repair. Through incisions made on the back side of the eyelids, Muller muscles were shortened and tightened, allowing the muscles to lift the eyelids more effectively.
Patient, pictured here 1-month post bilateral internal ptosis repair, demonstrated natural restoration of the eyelid openings. Patient appeared brighter, balanced and harmonious, without looking overdone.
