How Is RF Microneedling Performed?

Dr. Phan cleanses your skin and applies lidocaine cream an hour before treatment to numb the area. She may also prescribe an oral sedative and pain medication to increase your comfort. During the procedure, Dr. Phan passes the ultrafine needles over your skin, creating micro-channels, which stimulate the production of collagen, elastin, and other growth factors. The needles also deliver RF energy into the deeper layer of the skin, causing them to contract and tighten.

For highly reactive skin or slow-to-heal skin, Dr. Phan may recommend polydeoxyribonucleotide (PDRN). When used during microneedling, PDRN can facilitate a faster recovery and enhanced result.  PDRN is derived from wild salmon DNA and has anti-inflammatory properties. It improves microcirculation for healing and stimulates growth factors for cell turnover and collagen production.

What To Expect After RF Microneedling

There is little to no downtime after Morpheus8. You may experience some redness, tightness, and sensitivity for the first 3 to 4 days. As your body produces new collagen, your skin’s texture and quality will gradually improve over the next several weeks.

For the best results, we recommend an initial treatment cadence of 3 to 5 sessions spaced 4 weeks apart. Your results will last up to 18 months, though many patients book an annual maintenance session to prolong their results.

Complementary Procedures

Microneedling primes the skin for better product absorption, from platelet-rich plasma (PRP) to medical-grade skincare products. Dr. Phan may also recommend including a chemical peel as part of your treatment plan for increased radiance and efficacy.

If you have more significant skin laxity and unwanted fat you would like to treat, FaceTite, AccuTite, and PDO threads are also excellent companion treatments to RF microneedling. Dr. Phan is a firm believer that the best, most long-lasting results require consistent maintenance with follow-up sessions and other physician-directed treatments.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should I wait to wear makeup after microneedling?

You should wait at least 48 to 72 hours before applying makeup after radiofrequency microneedling treatments. This waiting period allows your skin to begin healing before applying makeup.

Who can perform microneedling treatments in California?

In California, microneedling is regulated fairly strictly. RF microneedling is a medical procedure that is distinct from less invasive, at-home microneedling devices. At LaFace, Dr. Phan performs microneedling treatments.

Does RF microneedling tighten skin?

Yes, RF microneedling (radiofrequency microneedling) can tighten and firm the skin and improve texture. The heat from RF microneedling causes collagen fibers to contract and remodel, leading to noticeable skin tightening over time.

Does microneedling hurt?

Microneedling is usually well tolerated by most patients. Most people describe it as a prickly or scratching sensation, not sharp pain. However, it may be more uncomfortable on sensitive areas (like the forehead, around the eyes, or upper lip).
