Case Details
2-month post bilateral upper lid (external) ptosis repair in a patient who has muscle dystrophy and thus severe dysfunction of the retractor muscles that usually open the eyes. As a result, he came in with only 3-mm of eye opening on each side. Incisions were made in the eyelid creases. Levator muscles were detached from the eyelids, shortened by removing a segment of the muscles, reattached with three sutures and thus tightened. The tighter levator muscles could now contract more strongly and function as they should, lifting the eyelids up to a normal height. Eyes opened wider. Patient could see more, avoid obstacles and falling, and looked more awake and engaged.
