Case Details
This patient in his 70s presented with drooping upper eyelids that made him look sleepy.
On evaluation, Dr. Phan noted bilateral upper eyelid ptosis, with the eyelid margins resting near the center of the pupils. This occurred because the muscles responsible for lifting the eyelids thinned, stretched, and weakened over time. In addition, Dr. Phan noted excess skin of the upper eyelids. To address the upper lid ptosis and dermatochalasis, Dr. Phan recommended bilateral external ptosis repair and blepharoplasty, respectively. Incisions were made through the upper eyelid creases, and the levator muscles were shortened and tightened to help them function more effectively in elevating the upper eyelids. Excess skin was also removed on both sides.
Patient, pictured here 1 month after bilateral external ptosis repair and blepharoplasty, demonstrated restoration of normal-sized eye openings and natural-appearing eyelid folds. His eyes appeared brighter, and patient looked refreshed, engaged and symmetrical.
